Title:
Exercise Physiology and Power / Pace Analysis for Triathlon Coaches
Dates:
Saturday, January 19th 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Sunday, January 20th 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location:
Kean University
Athletic Training Department Library

Union, NJ 07083
Lecturer:
Dr. Philip Friere Skiba
Sponsors:
PhysFarm Training Systems LLC
Kean University Athletic Training Department
Learning Objectives:
1. Thorough discussion of the major points of exercise physiology and biomechanics as they apply to coaching endurance athletics (primarily triathletes).
2. Practical application of recent developments to the training of triathletes of all ability levels, including power, GPS and HR analysis.
3. Use of peer-reviewed data to develop best practices for coaching.
Lectures To Include:
Human Anatomy: Reviewing the human machine, the parts, and the implications for addressing different systems to improve athletic performance. The basics of biomechanics.
VO2max: Determinants, importance, alternative theories and implications for training techniques using power and/or pace.
Lactate Threshold: Determinants, recent developments and training techniques. Application and comparison of different field tests, power / data analysis techniques, and implications for training.
Efficiency and Economy: Determinants and importance as they relate to biomechanics.
Strength Training: A review of current practices, research, myths and realities. Relationship to the mechanics of the constituent sports of triathlon.
Performance Nutrition: The science of fueling before, during and after events and / or training. Science of carbohydrate supplementation and implications of mixed sources.
Training Stress: How do we quantify and evaluate data from different sports to understand athlete stress WITHOUT a million dollar lab. Power file / GPS / Pace / HR analysis made easy.
Training Theory and Performance Modeling: Understanding mathematical simplifications of the athlete and using them to make meaningful decisions regarding training.
